Streaming was supposed to be the cheap alternative to cable. For a lot of households it's become its own line item that quietly adds up across three or four platforms. Here's what actually moves the number down.
1. Audit what you're actually watching
Check your last month of viewing on each platform. It's common to find at least one subscription that hasn't been opened in weeks - that's the easiest cut, with zero downside.
2. Choose longer plans over monthly
Monthly plans carry the worst per-month rate on almost every platform. A Netflix 12-month plan works out to a fraction of the per-month cost of paying monthly, and the same pattern holds for JioHotstar and YouTube Premium. If you know you'll keep a platform for the year, committing upfront is the single biggest lever you control directly.
3. Go seasonal where it makes sense
Not every platform needs to be active year-round. If cricket is the only reason you subscribe to JioHotstar, a shorter plan timed to the season costs far less than paying for months you won't use.
4. Use managed shared accounts instead of paying full price alone
This is where the largest savings actually come from. A shared account splits the platform's own subscription cost across multiple personal profiles instead of one person carrying the full official price - see the How It Works page for how that's managed responsibly rather than just handing out a password.
5. Rotate instead of running everything at once
If your list is genuinely all Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, Zee5, SonyLiv, and YouTube Premium, you probably don't watch all six with equal intensity every month. Keeping the two or three you use most and rotating the rest based on what's currently airing keeps the bill down without giving anything up permanently.
